Worst Combo of All Time?
In one way, I’m just glad it’s here, but that cross-through Dankukyaku was awesome, as was the max damage…I never thought about trying a dizzy combo with Dan. I don’t think it’s possible to watch any of your vids and not learn something new.
By the way, the bit “whatever it is you people like so much about him at 0:58” has me dying of laughter. You must have really hated your time in training mode with this SUPER VERSATILE fella.
You really don’t like Dan, do you, Maj? XD
Well, i don’t dislike him. He’s just not one of my favorite characters in any game he’s been in. He never has more than a couple of interesting combo elements. Guess i just don’t see what the big deal is. Though for what it’s worth, i think he’s pretty funny in SF4 – especially his back throw and his super.
Personally I think he’s a more interesting combo character than, for example, Ryu in this game. When I think about it, Ryu really doesn’t have a lot going for him, does he?
Personally I’ve never seen Dan as a joke character. The only thing I like about his jokiness is the air taunt, I’m glad they actually gave it SOME use in SFIV.
No way dude, Ryu is strong. He’s way more interesting than Dan in SF4. Ryu has super fireball, ultra fireball, EX Hurricane Kick, j.MP, F+HP, not to mention genuine link flexibility; there’s no contest.
The only tools Dan has are some weird ghettokick setups and (bare minimum) frame advantage on a joke fireball. And close s.MP, but Ryu has that too. The most unique thing about Dan is his Taunt super to ultra cancel, but you really can’t get much mileage out of that beyond week-one combos. SSF4 Dan’s ultra-2 makes him somewhat more interesting, but still not enough to take the lead.
The only reason Ryu is underappreciated now is because he always gets so much attention from day one of any game. If the whole community spent equal time recording combos for Dan and Ryu, you’d get tired of Dan way before you got tired of Ryu.
As for being a joke character, it’s not the Taunts that define him as such. It’s (always been) the fireball. His DP used to be a joke too, but they made it legit in SF4 so he’s not totally useless in matches, but he still has obvious disadvantages across the board – starting from terrible normals.
In fairness though, i did enjoy this whole process of releasing a bootleg Dan trailer, and lowering everyone’s expectations, and reading the responses along the way. It just happened on a whim as soon as i found that zero damage combo but it wouldn’t have worked as well with Ryu or Sagat or whomever. And i guess Dan’s goofy character does deserve some credit for enabling these kinds of offbeat experiments.
Oh yeah, I forgot about Dan’s sucky links. My head has already moved on to AE XD But across all the combo challenges we’ve had, Ryu always seem to be one of the harder characters to work with. For example, fireworks. He just doesn’t have any unique combo mechanics imo. That would be f.HP if anything. Dan at least has his links from Gadoken and such.
was thinking the same thing on dan’s uppercut. i mean even 2nd-impact sean never had good (non-ex) uppercuts.
