SF4 Simultaneous Throws Overview by error1

Some folks have been wondering what happens when two throws are performed at the same time in Street Fighter IV, so error1 compiled this video to prove that the results are random.

notes:
Every situation demonstrated in this video applies to basically all Capcom fighting games in existence. This is just how it works when two eligible throws overlap. The convention of throws taking priority over regular attacks has been around forever too.

I didn’t realise it was random with command throws vs normal throws, always thought command throws win. Good to know =]

  2. Moony says:

In third strike a normal throw can tech a command throw but only when done on exactly the same frame. When two SPDs are done in the same frame they tech. If they’re a frame apart the one executed first wins. If two people air throw there’s an air tech. Even if you don’t have an air throw you can still tech air throws with late jab+short. If two 720s are done in the same frame I believe they both whiff. Way to take a step back, Crapcom. And another thing, where’s my good juggle mechanics and visible stun meter?

I enjoy both third strike and SF4.

are you sure, I just now tested Alex hcb throw vs his neutral throw and the winner was random

    • Moony says:

I’ve done oro’s command throw and been teched out of it, and done hugo command grabs that were teched somehow. I kind of assumed alex would be the same

I know you can “tech” Makoto’s command throw, though I’m told really it’s Makoto teching the normal throw (what’s the difference, really?)…and I’ve seen Hugo’s Meat Squasher command grab get teched, but never his 360 or 720…or Alex’s 360, HCB+P, or even his Spiral DDT (HCB+K), which is clearly the king of all moves (shut up, maj).

Oro’s throw is different as it can also be blocked or parried, same with Ibuki’s taunt – it can be blocked, parried, or throw teched – and I’m guessing the same is true with Raida (HCB+P), as it is comboable/blockable the same way Oro’s command grab is.

Unless you teched out of Hugo’s 360, my guess is that some are considered pure command grabs, and others aren’t – Makoto’s Karakusa and Hugo’s Meat Squasher are the weird in-between cases. Not sure about Hugo’s HCB+K wallslam throw, would have to test.

error, did not know regular throws could beat command grabs in 3s…or any game, really, I would have thought the command takes true priority, instead of frame-data/hitbox advantage. interesting stuff. ever think about doing the same with 3s? i’ve got some of the data here

    • Maj says:

What negative remark could i possibly make about the king of all moves?? Clearly it’s untechable because of its unbridled awesomeness and not because Capcom couldn’t figure out a non-ghetto way to ground tech an airborne move.

    • onreload says:

Haha, I meant to add “not that I see the move very often,” meaning I haven’t ever tried it etc. For all I know, it’s like Ibuki’s taunt grab, which is technically airborne, yet techable while standing. I dunno if I’d call it ghetto looking, though

I was wondering if you were alive, Maj. lol. Error did a good job on this. On the SRK comments for the article on this video, some guy asked: “On the subject of grabs, is it possible to cancel armor into a throw???”

    • error1 says:

didn’t realize it was on srk, I’ll answer over there but I’ll post it here too

off a focus attack? no ( except giefs super I think ), Balrog, Zangief, Abel can probably Kara cancel some of there command throws off a special move
